Thoughts on raḥma in Islamic religious tradition

Abstract : This essay deals with ‘mercy’ or rahma, not as a divine characteristic, but rather as the basic ele-ment in the relations the good Muslim must maintain with his neighbour. Looking at the times the root r–ḥ–mis mentioned in the Qur’an, one can see that reciprocal mercy means, on the one hand, family rela-tions (cfr. raḥīm), that is to say between parents and children, and between spouses (respectively Qur’ān17,24 et 30,21), and, on the other hand, it refers similarly to believers, Muslims and Christians (respecti-vely Qur’ān90,17 et 57,27), by presenting itself as a common element between believers of different re-ligions. This study seeks to underline the peculiarities of raḥmain the context of Islamic preaching, ba-sing itself on the Tradition (mainly the Six books but also, for example, a work of Ibn Ṭulūn al–Ṣāliḥī, d.953/1546, dedicated wholly to raḥma) and on certain important Sunni commentaries, especially those ofthe classical period.[17]Raḥma dans la tradition religieuse islamique145
