Abstract :
\nThe essay emphasizes cultural specificities, starting with the terminology currently used to describe sustainability, and investigates the lack of homogeneity of the semantic fields belonging respectively to sustainability and istid\u0101ma, the first focused on weight and burden, especially material (cf. the Latin sustin\u0113re), and the other instead on duration (the synonyms proposed by medieval lexicologists are in fact: baqiya, thabata, imtadda, inta\u1e93ara e raqaba). Drawing on the works of a number of contemporary Arab Muslim intellectuals, my contribution aims to present the environmental sustainability (al-istid\u0101ma al-b\u012b\u02beiyya) from an Islamic perspective, and to address the urgent moral imperative – to ensure the well-being of the present generation without compromising the well-being of future generations – as part of the ethical heritage of the Islamic religion; the authors consulted rely both on the notion of khil\u0101fa, and a revisionist exegesis of the Qur\u2019anic expression fas\u0101d f\u012b l-ar\u1e0d or \u201ccorruption on earth\u201d, which precisely reads the Qur\u2019anic opposition fas\u0101d \/i\u1e63l\u0101\u1e25 in an ecological key. Other major themes explored in contemporary Islamic environmentalist Arabic literature, through Qur\u2019anic verses and Traditions of the Prophet, include: the role of the shar\u012b\u02bfa in producing environmental awareness (al-wa\u02bf\u012b al-b\u012b\u02be\u012b); and its ability to provide all the guidance necessary to maintain the status quo, with the different methods of conservation and care (\u1e25if\u0101\u1e93, ri\u02bf\u0101ya) of the world, including through the application of general principles of Islamic law (al-qaw\u0101\u02bfid al-fiqhiyya).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":21467,"template":"","class_list":["post-21451","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"date_tournage":"","yoast_head":"\n
