Some Considerations on Perfumes in Islam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Abstract<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Published in volume 20 (2025) of <em>Quaderni di Studi Arabi<\/em>, this article by <a href=\"https:\/\/pluriel.fuce.eu\/en\/chercheur\/zilio-grandi-ida\/\"><strong>Ida Zilio-Grandi<\/strong><\/a> (Ca&#8217; Foscari University of Venice) revisits a constant of Islamic history that has attracted relatively little scholarly attention: the passion for perfumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a passion is visible today in the markets of the Middle East as well as in the vast shopping malls of the Gulf cities. The author takes as a further sign the recent opening of a museum entirely devoted to perfumes, the &#8220;House of Perfumes&#8221; (<em>Bayt al-\u02bfu\u1e6d\u016br<\/em>), in the historic al-Shindagha district of Dubai, facing the Dubai Creek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting from this contemporary horizon, the essay proposes a series of considerations on the cultural importance of perfumes in Islamic society, from the earliest times until today, beginning with the use of three key words of the lexicon: <em>r\u012b\u1e25<\/em>, <em>\u1e6d\u012bb<\/em> and <em>\u02bfi\u1e6dr<\/em>, in the foundational texts, and then following their extensions in the prophetic tradition, spirituality and material culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article extends, through an unexpected sensory entry point, the sustained work Zilio-Grandi has devoted for more than two decades to the ethical and spiritual Arab-Muslim lexicon (see in particular her recent volume <a href=\"https:\/\/pluriel.fuce.eu\/en\/publication\/the-virtues-of-the-good-muslim\/\"><strong><em>The Virtues of the Good Muslim<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Ca&#8217; Foscari, 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/brill.com\/view\/journals\/qsa\/qsa-overview.xml\"><strong>Brill journal page<\/strong><\/a>; author&#8217;s version on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/143374863\/\"><strong>Academia.edu<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"featured_media":37062,"template":"","class_list":["post-37069","article","type-article","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"date_tournage":"2025-01-01","yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>A Fragrant Spiritual Heritage.
