{"id":37181,"date":"2026-09-24T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pluriel.fuce.eu\/article\/experiencing-a-mosque-through-photography-islam-as-an-ordinary-religion\/"},"modified":"2026-09-24T06:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T05:00:00","slug":"experiencing-a-mosque-through-photography-islam-as-an-ordinary-religion","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/pluriel.fuce.eu\/en\/article\/experiencing-a-mosque-through-photography-islam-as-an-ordinary-religion\/","title":{"rendered":"Experiencing a Mosque Through Photography: Islam As an Ordinary Religion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Abstract<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Published in 2021 in <em>Visual Ethnography<\/em> (vol. 10, no. 2) under the title &#8220;<em>Experiencing a Mosque Through Photography: Islam As an Ordinary Religion<\/em>&#8220;, this article by <a href=\"https:\/\/pluriel.fuce.eu\/en\/chercheur\/guillaume-chatagny\/\"><strong>Guillaume Chatagny<\/strong><\/a>, then a doctoral student in sociology at the University of Fribourg (and in ethnology at the University Paris-Nanterre), attached as a graduate assistant to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifr.ch\/szig\/en\/\"><strong>Swiss Centre for Islam and Society<\/strong><\/a> (CSIS), reflects on the use of photography for an ethno-sociological study which interrogates the spatial configuration of a mosque in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After defining the concept of spatial configuration and presenting his field, the author considers several difficulties pertaining to the photography of concrete situations. He shows that photography enables the researcher to take a critical distance from their own ethnographic activity and the way it can influence the behaviour of actors in the field. Through analyzing spatial configurations as made visible by the image, the author advances two social logics pertaining to the constitution of social space: discretion and conviviality.
