Interview. On Wednesday, June 5, PISAI announced the appointment of Wasim Salman for a three-year term at the head of the institution, a historical partner of Pluriel<\/em>. He succeeds Diego Sarri\u00f3 Cucarella, former member of the Pluriel<\/em> scientific committee, who actively contributed to our projects and the congress in Abu Dhabi last February for six years.<\/p>\n\n

Pluriel <\/em>: In what state of mind are you approaching your mandate as president of PISAI?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Wasim Salman: I am very honored by the trust that the Catholic Church has placed in me for this mission at PISAI, an institute that plays a fundamental role in Islamic-Christian dialogue. The great figures who have led the institute’s activities, from Father Maurice Borrmans to Father Diego Sarri\u00f2 Cucarella, place me before the responsibility of continuing the work in the spirit of the White Fathers, my masters in Islamology since the years of my theological training at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in Lebanon. It is also a look towards the future insofar as the dialogue with Islam in Europe and in the Arab world has new requirements to which we must respond. I remember this sentence pronounced by the German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer who affirmed at the end of his life that the future of humanity depended on interreligious dialogue. Dialogue is the only way to peace between religions and between nations. It is the love for our Muslim brothers that will mark our activities, especially since the Church shares with Islam the same concerns described and developed extensively in the Document on Human Fraternity<\/em>, which was the subject of the last Pluriel<\/em> congress.<\/p>\n\n

What will be the challenges and projects of your term?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The great challenge consists in teaching Arabic as an indispensable basis for understanding Islam from primary sources. Despite current tendencies to study Islam as a doctrine and history in a general way, I believe that, without the Arabic language, our approach remains poor and our knowledge of Islam is limited to a single facet or to what Western thinkers present to us. On the contrary, PISAI’s research aims to offer the student tools to unravel the mysteries of this great religion whose spread is impressive today.<\/p>\n\n

    As for future projects, I must first complete the projects already launched by my predecessor to make PISAI a center of excellence and deepen scientific research by giving professors and researchers the time and means to carry out their work in complete freedom.<\/p>\n\n

    It is also important to open up more to the Arab world by showing the specificity of the training offered by PISAI regarding the dialogue that new generations need in this delicate phase of the region’s history. Thus, PISAI makes it possible to correct prejudices about the other, to have access to a scientific knowledge of Islam and to undertake the paths of dialogue to live together as citizens of the same nation while respecting religious differences. Many researchers of the last century had learned Arabic in Damascus or Beirut, keeping vivid memories of these wonderful countries.<\/p>\n\n

    After the insurrections of recent years and the war, the Middle East is no longer an easy destination to visit. I think it would take courage to visit Arab countries and have experiences where Muslims and Christians share the same problems, especially since Islam in Europe depends on that experienced on the other side of the Mediterranean. Only political stability will allow us to find partners for language stays, to learn about Islam as it is lived far from the images provided by the media, and to strengthen collaboration with other research institutions.<\/p>\n\n

    Finally, I would like to highlight PISAI’s pluralist vision, capable of articulating different political and religious institutions that disagree on the place of religion in contemporary society. We have the experience to organize exchanges between intellectuals, researchers, imams and priests, in order to deepen mutual understanding and overcome all misunderstandings due to cultural and linguistic differences. I am convinced that PISAI can effectively contribute to the training of priests, imams and all those who would like to promote harmony and interreligious dialogue thanks to the experience gained over a century and its privileged university position.<\/p>\n\n

    Biography<\/h3>\n\n

    Born in Damascus, Wasim Salman has been a professor of contemporary Arab-Islamic thought at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) since 2016. Syrian-Italian, he holds a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University (2009) and in Arabic philosophy from the University of Tor Vergata (2016) and is a member of the editorial board of Islamochristiana<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n

    In 2024, he participates in the Pluriel <\/em>congress in Abu Dhabi on the theme “Impacts and perspectives of the Document on Human Fraternity<\/em>” with a paper entitled: “Dialogue, Plurality and Brotherhood in the Thought of Imam Al-Tayeb”<\/em>. He is also the author of Political Islam and the Stakes of Interpretation.
