The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs is launching a call for applications for mobility fellowships in Islamic studies. These fellowships will enable second-year Master\u2019s students, PhD candidates, and recent PhD holders to undertake research stays within the network of French research institutes abroad (UMIFRE) and partner institutions. Applications are open until 15 September 2025.<\/em><\/p>\n

Supporting field research in Islamic studies<\/h3>\n

This fellowship programme aims to support emerging scholars in Islamic studies by offering researchers the opportunity to carry out fieldwork within recognized research institutions. Fellows will be hosted by centres in the UMIFRE network as well as by other partner institutes across different regions of the world.<\/p>\n

Islamic studies is understood in its broadest sense, encompassing numerous disciplines. Research projects may address archaeology, Islamic art and architecture, critical study of classical Islamic religious and philosophical texts, political and cultural history of Islam, philological and codicological studies, or social science approaches to contemporary Muslim communities.<\/p>\n

Fellowship terms and funding<\/h3>\n

The programme offers two fellowship tracks based on academic level. Second-year Master\u2019s students students will receive \u20ac1,000 per month for stays of one to three months. PhD candidates and recent PhD holders will receive \u20ac1,700 per month for a six-month period.<\/p>\n

Fellows will be fully integrated into their host institutions’ research teams and will present their findings within these structures. This integration will foster scholarly exchange and enable fellows to benefit from the local expertise of permanent researchers.<\/p>\n

Eligibility criteria<\/h3>\n

Candidates must meet several conditions to be eligible. They must not have received this fellowship during the 2024-2025 academic year, nor hold another French government mobility fellowship during the proposed period. Master’s students must have completed their first year and be enrolled in Master 2 at a French university or be co-supervised by a faculty member from a French university. PhD candidates must be enrolled at a French university or in a cotutelle arrangement, while recent PhD holders must have defended their thesis after 31 December 2020, reside in France, and be affiliated with a research laboratory.<\/p>\n

Application requirements<\/h3>\n

The application must include: a copy of valid identification; the official information form; certificates of university enrollment or proof of thesis defense as applicable; a CV (maximum two pages); and a detailed research proposal of up to 15,000 characters, including plans for integration into the host institution. Candidates must also provide an invitation letter from the director of the UMIFRE centre or host institute, a letter of recommendation from their academic supervisor, and proof of social security coverage.<\/p>\n

Complete applications must be submitted via email before 15 September 2025 to the dedicated address. A selection committee of specialists will convene in October to review applications and select fellows. Candidates will be notified of results within weeks of the committee meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n
