On Saturday 30 May 2026<\/strong>, the Catholic Institute of the Mediterranean<\/strong> (ICM, Marseille) inaugurated the Chair of Theology in Dialogue with Islam<\/strong>, placed under the patronage of Christian de Cherg\u00e9<\/strong>. The opening address was given by His Eminence Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline<\/strong>, Archbishop of Marseille. Hosted by the Institute of Religious Sciences and Theology (ISTR) under the direction of Joseph S\u00e8ne and Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Meurirot, the chair is designed as a long-term research platform on the contemporary stakes of interreligious encounter, in the wake of the thought of the monks of Tibhirine and of the Rib\u00e2t es-Sal\u00e2m<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inauguration coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the assassination of the monks of Tibhirine<\/strong>, in May 1996. The opening colloquium set out to show how the thought of Prior Christian de Cherg\u00e9, and the experience of the spiritual dialogue group Rib\u00e2t es-Sal\u00e2m<\/em> (the “Bond of Peace”), which gathered monks, women religious and Algerian Sufis from 1980 onwards, still challenges Christian theology today and its capacity to be transformed by religious otherness. Rather than offering a memorial tribute, the ICM is rooting this heritage within a structured research programme, nourished by the theological, monastic and spiritual sources the monks left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
