On 25 and 26 June 2026, Wasim Salman<\/strong><\/a>, President of PISAI<\/strong><\/a>, took part in Rome in the workshop Religious Humanisms, Inclusive Citizenship and Democracy<\/em>, organised by the University of Notre Dame Rome, together with the Ansari Institute for Global Engagement with Religion, John Cabot University, the Hanns Seidel Stiftung, the Luigi Sturzo Institute and the Institute for Humanitarian Islam of Jakarta.<\/p>\n\n

This two-day seminar explored the use of religious or faith-based expressions of humanism in contemporary global politics as a basis for promoting human dignity, democracy and international cooperation. It featured keynote lectures by Robert Hefner (Boston University) on the Humanitarian Islam movement in Indonesia, and Luke Bretherton (University of Oxford) on Christian Humanism and Christian democracy.<\/p>\n\n

Wasim Salman’s contribution, centred on the notion of citizenship and minority according to al-Azhar after the Abu Dhabi Document, highlighted the possibility of moving beyond classical Islamic theology’s distinction between Muslims and non-Muslims within the same state. Salman praised al-Azhar’s efforts to overcome all forms of discrimination between citizens, rejecting the existence of a religious state in Islamic history and advocating for a democratic republic model based on the equality of all citizens.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
