The Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI)<\/strong><\/a> opened its 2026-2027 academic year, the year of its centenary, in Rome on Friday 2 October 2026. After Mass in the Institute’s chapel, celebrated by Don Francesco Baronchelli, Secretary General, the morning continued in the library with a welcome address by the President, Wasim Salman<\/strong><\/a>, who introduced the year to the academic community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inaugural lecture was entrusted to Michael Alexander Barry, historian of Islamic civilisation and art, lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University and former consultative chairman of the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Its title, Sanctifying Figurative Art in Late Medieval Eastern Islam: Master Bihz\u0101d of Her\u0101t (AD 1465-1535) and the Qur\u02be\u0101nic Tradition of the Bird of Christ<\/em>, sets the work of the great master of Persian painting, active at the Timurid court of Herat, alongside the Qur\u02be\u0101nic account of Jesus shaping the form of a bird out of clay and breathing life into it, by God’s leave (Qur\u02be\u0101n 3:49 and 5:110).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A specialist of Persian painting and of Afghanistan, Michael Barry devoted a landmark study to the painter, Figurative Art in Medieval Islam and the Riddle of Bihz\u00e2d of Her\u00e2t (1465-1535)<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (Flammarion, 2004), which offers a symbolic reading of Persian miniatures in the light of mystical poetry. He also wrote the commentary on the paintings illustrating \u02bfA\u1e6d\u1e6d\u0101r’s Canticle of the Birds<\/em> (Diane de Selliers, 2012).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new year promises to be a full one for the Institute: on 14 October, Dominique Avon<\/strong><\/a> will give the inaugural lecture of the chair “Mediterranean, Religions and Societies”, “Religious Dimensions of Conflicts in the Mediterranean”<\/strong><\/a>, and PISAI will celebrate its centenary<\/strong><\/a> with an international conference in Rome on 11 and 12 December 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
