Following on from the 2019 series &#8220;Le Coran des historiens&#8221; (The Qur&#8217;an according to Historians), it draws on the collective volume <a href=\"https:\/\/pluriel.fuce.eu\/en\/publication\/muhammad-according-to-historians\/\"><strong><em>Le Mahomet des historiens<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (Muhammad according to Historians, Cerf, 2025), edited by John Tolan and Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi, which brings together the work of some fifty specialists: drawing on Islamic and non-Islamic sources, they highlight the plurality of traditions, interpretations and representations of Muhammad over the centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a first lecture in June, three sessions are scheduled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Thursday 29 October 2026<\/strong>: &#8220;An Enlightenment Muhammad: The Prophet in European Authors of the 17th and 18th Centuries&#8221;, by <a href=\"https:\/\/pluriel.fuce.eu\/en\/chercheur\/john-tolan\/\"><strong>John Tolan<\/strong><\/a>, emeritus professor of history at the University of Nantes. In 1649, the year the first English translation of the Qur&#8217;an was published in London, royalists portrayed Cromwell as a &#8220;new Muhammad&#8221;; in the 18th century, by contrast, many English and French authors used the Prophet, seen either as an impostor or as a reformer, as a weapon against Churches they considered all-powerful and corrupt (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.institut-cultures-islam.org\/evenements\/le-mahomet-des-historiens-un-mahomet-des-lumieres-le-prophete-chez-les-auteurs-europeens-des-17e-et-18e-siecles\/\"><strong>details<\/strong><\/a>);<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Thursday 26 November 2026<\/strong>: &#8220;The Prophet&#8217;s Final Days and Succession&#8221;, by Hela Ouardi, professor at the University of Tunis, author of <em>Les Derniers Jours de Muhammad<\/em> (Albin Michel, 2016) and of the trilogy <em>Les Califes maudits<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.institut-cultures-islam.org\/evenements\/le-mahomet-des-historiens-fin-de-vie-et-succession-du-prophete\/\"><strong>details<\/strong><\/a>);<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Thursday 21 January 2027<\/strong>: &#8220;The Prophet in Sub-Saharan Africa and Indonesia&#8221;, by <a href=\"https:\/\/pluriel.fuce.eu\/en\/chercheur\/tessangare-youssef\/\"><strong>Youssouf Sangar\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> (Inalco) and R\u00e9my Madinier (CNRS), who will present the figure of the Prophet in regions that are home to a large share of today&#8217;s Muslims (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.institut-cultures-islam.org\/evenements\/le-mahomet-des-historiens-le-prophete-en-afrique-subsaharienne-et-en-indonesie\/\"><strong>details<\/strong><\/a>).<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Time:<\/strong> each lecture at 7:00 pm (1 hour 30 minutes);<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Venue:<\/strong> Institut des cultures d&#8217;islam, 56 rue Stephenson, Paris 18th;<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Admission:<\/strong> free, subject to availability;<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Programme:<\/strong> see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.institut-cultures-islam.org\/agenda\/\"><strong>ICI events page<\/strong><\/a> (in French).<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Institut des cultures d&#8217;islam (ICI, Paris) and the Institute for the Study of Religions and Secularism (IREL, \u00c9cole pratique des hautes \u00e9tudes) are continuing their lecture series on the historical study of the Prophet of Islam.
