Conference by Anna HAGER at the second International Congress of PLURIEL in ROME<\/p>\n
This intervention aims to address an issue that is at the intersection between the thematic issues of citizenship and territory defined by Pluriel; namely how Islamic actors of different tendencies define the membership of non-IslamicMuslims in Egyptian and Lebanese societies, especially the religious, political, cultural and historical foundations that legitimize this membership.<\/p>\n
This intervention aims to go beyond the framework of reductive analysis of dhimma or \u00abdhimmitude\u00bb and to look at how, on the contrary, Islamist, Salafist, moderate, Lebanese and Egyptian actors, Sunni and Shia, are based on a selective reading of the Islamic heritage (the Koran, the hadith, including anecdotes about the prophet, Islamic history), but arrive at conceptions of belonging as different or even contradictory. These actors include Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood, Lebanese and Egyptian Salafist figures such as the Salafist Party el-Nour, the Gamaa al-Islamiyya, although renowned for their intransigent positions, as well as the authorities of official Islam such as al-Azhar.<\/p>\n
As many of these actors have held political roles in recent years (especially since 2011 for Egyptian actors), particular attention will be paid to the respective political and national contexts.
