The “radical evil” that tore Europe apart in the 20th century was totalitarianism (Hannah Arendt). Today, this evil has been reincarnated into a barbaric radicalisation that undermines societies. The radical evil that traumatizes Canada is fundamentalist jihad. This concept refers to current protest movements that retreat into an essentialist identity.<\/p>\n

This paper proposes to address the relationship between Islamist fundamentalism and nationalist fundamentalism that endangers living together in Canada. In this logic, nationalist fundamentalism rejects the Other (the immigrant). In the face of hard nationalist fundamentalism, Islamist fundamentalism is taking hold. A religious and politicised identity that appeals to Islamist internationalism. It is an “inverse orientalism” that rejects minority status and imposes Islamism as an alternative.<\/p>\n
