Since men-women relationship has mostly not been based on equality in these laws, but on traditional and historical responsibilities and duties of men and women, often announced as Islamic, women have become \u201cthe other\u201d or the secondary party in Islamic personal status laws. The paper will overview the general features of Islamic personal status laws (PSL) and will elucidate recent reforms and contestations around the laws applied in Egypt and Palestinian territories. What does the \u201ckhul\u2019\u201d reform in 2000 in Egyptian PSL mean in defining the rights of women? In the Palestinian context, what does an insistence to use Islamic sharia in personal status laws mean?
