I will primarily do so based on two very important texts. The first, of course, is titled “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together,” signed in Abu Dhabi by Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayyeb on February 4, 2019, and which will be the focus of the upcoming congress in February. The second text is solely from Pope Francis and is titled “Fratelli tutti on Fraternity and Social Friendship,” dated October 3, 2020. This is an encyclical letter, which means it is a solemn circular letter sent to Christians around the world, as well as to anyone who is willing to consider it. “Fratelli tutti,” which is Italian (translated into French as “tous frères”), is an expression from Saint Francis of Assisi. This saint from the 12th-13th century, who is still beloved today even outside of the Church, for his simplicity, joy, and radicalism, addressed all men and women of his time, inviting them to a love that surpasses the barriers of geography and space. One could even say: the barriers of ideologies… In doing so, he expressed the essence of what can be called “an open fraternity” that seeks to value each person regardless of their origin.
There are numerous connections between the two texts – the document signed in Abu Dhabi and the Encyclical – I will mention only the most obvious ones. First of all, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayyeb, whom Pope Francis commonly refers to as “friend,” is mentioned 5 times in Fratelli tutti. The document itself is cited 8 times, which of course indicates a continuity, or a development, but also the importance of this first document where human diversity is seen not as a problem but as an opportunity to exercise charity and fraternity: “This encyclical gathers and develops important themes addressed in this document that we have signed together,” the Pope even affirms at the beginning of his Letter (FT 5). And he concludes it by extensively quoting this same document with the beautiful prayer they wrote together (these are the last sections of the Encyclical): “In the name of God [… we declare] to adopt the culture of dialogue as a path; common collaboration as conduct; mutual knowledge as method and criterion,” which is the title I have chosen for my presentation.
However, be careful not to consider these texts as mere sermons destined to be quickly forgotten. While fraternity in diversity is the cornerstone of these two intimately linked texts, the concept cannot be interpreted solely in a sociological and sentimental sense. Fraternity must be accompanied by actions and, for Christians, it must be exercised primarily towards the poor, immigrants, the forgotten, or the rejected of the earth. For we know all too well that “believing in God and worshiping Him does not guarantee living according to His will. A person of faith may not be faithful to everything that faith demands of them, and yet they may feel close to God and believe they have more dignity than others” (FT 74). That is why the inclusion or exclusion of the person in distress on the side of the road defines all economic, political, social, and religious projects (cf. FT 69), meaning that the poor are the criterion for discerning whether we are heading in the right direction in all our projects: political, economic, cultural, but also academic and social. Do the poor form part of my horizon or are they absent, or even denied? “For the Church, the option for the poor [meaning the choice to be ‘on the side of the poor’] is a theological category before being cultural, sociological, political, or philosophical,” wrote Pope Francis at the very beginning of his pontificate (Evangelii Gaudium, 2013, n. 198). Practically speaking, when these poor individuals are Muslim immigrants arriving in our countries, “we Christians should welcome them with affection and respect […], in the same way that we hope and ask to be welcomed and respected in countries with Islamic traditions” (EG 253).

What does this expression mean, which we find in the document signed in Abu Dhabi: “The culture of dialogue as a path; common collaboration as conduct; reciprocal knowledge as method and criterion,” which Al-Azhar al-Sharif – with Muslims from the East and West – together with the Catholic Church – with Catholics from the East and West – declare to adopt? It means, first and foremost, in the face of the world, that if there are “clashes of civilizations,” as political scientist Samuel Huntington said, other directions for the future of humanity are also possible. Contrary to all expectations, and especially contrary to a linear – and therefore erroneous – view of history that would affirm a permanent conflict between Islam and Christianity as an immutable law, it has been said, by the simple fact of this meeting, that we – as humans – are capable of moving away from confrontation and breaking the barriers, ideological and socio-political constraints in which we were trapped. I’m not sure if we have fully realized this. Not frontal resolution of problems, but dialogical, fraternal resolution.
We all know, as history has abundantly shown, that the famous Roman adage Si vis pacem para bellum (“If you want peace, prepare for war”), which has always been presented as common sense, is actually only realistic in the short term. Ultimately, this idea always leads to failure if it is not accompanied by a deep reflection on the causes of war and hatred towards others. And in a world that is increasingly multicultural and multi-religious like ours, I believe that it needs to be replaced today with another adage: “If you want peace, prepare for peace”. How? By learning – precisely – to dialogue, to encounter the “others” who are different, that is, by learning to live our relationships in a fraternal manner.
You know that the Pope is very fond of sports. To a sports team that came to meet him a few years ago, he used an image that can greatly help us understand this:
“Sport can promote a culture of dialogue and respectful encounters. The competition with opponents in sports competitions is always referred to as a ‘meeting’, never a ‘confrontation’, because ultimately, even though it is preferable to win, in a certain sense both sides win. This is the world we dream of and firmly want to build, based on healthy competition, which always sees the opponent as both a friend and a brother.” (To the members of the Italian Sports Center, 11/05/2019)
Today, “religious leaders are called to be true ‘people of dialogue,’ working towards the construction of peace” (FT 284), not to establish a new global religion, because what is proposed here – through the expression “culture of dialogue as a path, etc.” – is a new paradigm for living in a world that will be even more marked by diversity tomorrow. It is about learning, seeking, and inventing ways to live together, with our irreducible differences. Everyone is concerned, but I emphasize that the document signed in Abu Dhabi is, above all, an exhortation to be put into practice, especially by individuals or organizations that can influence society: “Authorities, influential leaders, religious men from around the world, competent regional and international organizations, civil society organizations, religious institutions, and leaders of thought.” What Pope Francis and Imam Ahmad al-Tayyeb clearly desire is for the text not to remain a dead letter, but to be translated into laws and genuine reforms of mentality and society. I also remind you that this is not just another “Islam-Christian declaration”: the words “Islam,” “Christianity,” and “Islam-Christian dialogue” do not appear in the document. However, it addresses everyone, well beyond religious affiliations, “intellectuals, philosophers, religious men, artists, media operators, and men of culture from all parts of the world.” In a way, this exhortation invites us to concretely renew the discourse and style of interfaith and intercultural encounters, moving not only from words to actions, but also from political correctness to healthy confrontation and true cooperation, to collectively rethink “fraternity” – that is, the future of humanity – “believers and non-believers, and all people of goodwill,” as it is said.
To stay within the interreligious field and to illustrate how the document has been appropriated or addressed to communities other than the Church and the Ummah, on November 8, 2019, a few months after the document was signed, during the Conference “Human Fraternity: A Jewish Reflection for a Common Existence” at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Ronald S. Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress, declared: “On behalf of the global Jewish community, I can tell you that the Abu Dhabi Declaration is a significant international document that we, Jews, deeply respect. We share its fundamental values and endorse its fundamental principles” (repeated twice).
On November 22nd, during his apostolic trip to Thailand, at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, the Pope made numerous references to the Document on Fraternity in the presence of eighteen religious leaders representing the country’s traditional religions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, etc.
The times when the logic of isolation could prevail in the conception of time and space and impose itself as a valid mechanism for conflict resolution are over. It is time today to dare to imagine the logic of encounter and mutual dialogue as a path, mutual collaboration as a conduct, and reciprocal knowledge as a method and criterion. And in this way, offer a new paradigm for conflict resolution and contribute to understanding among individuals as well as to the preservation of creation. I believe that in this field, religions, as well as universities, without renouncing their essential characteristics and their own specialties, have much to bring and offer; everything we do in this direction is a significant step towards guaranteeing younger generations their right to the future, and will also be a service rendered to justice and a service to peace. It is only in this way that we will provide them with the necessary tools to be the main protagonists in creating sustainable and inclusive lifestyles.
And if I have to give an example outside of the “religious” (Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs…), but coming from civil society, of the adoption – or desire for adoption – of this paradigm for the good and future of humanity, there is at least one country that declared last year its intention to implement it in its educational and cultural institutions: East Timor. “Our national parliament,” said President José Ramos-Horta of this Southeast Asian nation, “unanimously voted in favor of adopting the Document on Human Fraternity as a national document. As president, I have signed a declaration in which I commit to working with the national authorities responsible for the educational system, as well as with the Catholic Church and other religious groups, in order to adopt the teachings and values of the Document on Human Fraternity within the framework of our national curriculum.”
I conclude now, as the time allotted to me is coming to an end, but I believe that this final quote from Pope Francis at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, as well as the adoption of this text by the nation of Timor-Leste, illustrate well what this choice of religious and political leaders can mean for themselves and their people, but also for inviting everyone to “a culture of dialogue as a pathway, common collaboration as a conduct, and mutual understanding as a method and criterion.” Thank you.

[869
post-28320","videos","type-videos","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","video_collection-webinaires-pluriel

A new path paved by Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayyeb - Pluriel

<meta property="og:description" content="Speech by Laurent Basanese Webinar, 27 October 2023 “The challenges of universal fraternity”.
