Dominique Avon, Director of Studies at the \u00c9cole pratique des hautes \u00e9tudes, traces the evolution of the discourse of the ulama of al-Azhar on Christianity since the 1930s. Confronted with the colonial European presence and then with a diversified Christian landscape, Egyptian Muslim scholars developed an ambivalent vision, between affirmation of the superiority of Islam, asymmetry of the view on Christian churches, fear of missionary proselytism, and search for rapprochement in the face of secularization.<\/p>\n
In the 1930s and 1940s, al-Azhar positioned itself as a bulwark against Christian missions while occasionally opening up to interreligious dialogue. After 1952, the tone hardened with ulama denouncing Christianity as a colonial remnant. A growing gap appeared between Christian initiatives for dialogue and the desire of Muslim religious authorities to promote a common front against atheism. At the turn of the 21st century, despite symbolic advances such as the Abu Dhabi Declaration on Human Fraternity, the dignitaries of al-Azhar struggled to define a new theological and legal status for non-Muslims in the land of Islam.<\/p>\n
