Reynolds, University of Notre Dame<br \/>\nMichel Youn\u00e8s, Catholic University of Lyon<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The origins of this event lie in an essay that Daniel Brown published in <em>Islamochristiana<\/em> no. 48 (2022), in which he surveys the various ways in which Christian scholars have reflected on the debate that has been ongoing for some decades about the historical origins of Islam. The underlying question of this essay is: How should Christians make sense of this debate? How might it impact their perception of Islam and their approach to Christian-Muslim relations?  <\/p>\n<p>The symposium began with brief remarks by Daniel Brown on his essay. Three Christian theologians with whom he engaged in dialogue in the essay, Daniel Madigan, Michel Youn\u00e8s, and Martin Accad, then offered responses. Sandra Toenies Keating and Gabriel Said Reynolds expanded the conversation further. David Marshall, who is currently serving as guest editor of Islamochristiana, served as moderator. The second half of the symposium began with a roundtable discussion and continued with a Q&#038;A session. We received far more questions than it was possible to address, and we offer our apologies to those participants whose questions could not be taken up.<\/p>\n<p>Please bear in mind that this event was primarily an exercise in Christian theological reflection on the significance of the ongoing historical debates about the origins of Islam; it did not seek primarily to address these debates directly. Because our discussion was centered on Christian theology, the scholars invited to make prepared contributions were all Christians.
