Faced with the situation opened by the wars in Gaza and Iran, he refuses from the outset the two symmetrical clich\u00e9s: the assimilation of Islam to jihad, and the apologetic invocation of <em>sal\u0101m<\/em>, that &#8220;peace falling from heaven&#8221; which in reality coexists with the binary logic of <em>d\u0101r al-isl\u0101m<\/em> and <em>d\u0101r al-\u1e25arb<\/em>, where peace presupposes the prior surrender of adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>To these dead ends Adrien Candiard opposes a third way, that of <em>\u1e63ul\u1e25<\/em>: peace as laborious reconciliation, negotiation and compromise. The demonstration draws on two classical jurists hardly suspect of complacency. The \u1e24anaf\u012b <strong>al-Sarakhs\u012b<\/strong> (11th century), in his <em>Shar\u1e25 al-Siyar al-Kab\u012br<\/em>, develops a genuine international law that protects non-combatants and makes peace by treaty the preferable option, in the name of <em>ma\u1e63la\u1e25a<\/em>, well-understood interest. The \u1e24anbal\u012b <strong>Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya<\/strong> (14th century), a disciple of Ibn Taymiyya often held to be the most intransigent, also admits, commenting on the truce of \u1e24udaybiyya, that a peace concluded on unfavourable terms may be legitimate when the interest of the community requires it.<\/p>\n<p>The central lesson is political: to draw peace out of mysticism and place it back within the order of calculation and the balance of forces. &#8220;One does not negotiate with prophetic visions or eschatological dreams,&#8221; insists Adrien Candiard, who warns against the return, in the three monotheisms, of apocalyptic discourses that make peace impossible by promising it absolute. He recalls that Yasser Arafat had invoked the truce of \u1e24udaybiyya at the time of the Oslo Accords to justify his approach: thirty years on, that humble realism appears more serious than the escalations that saturate the region.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture is moderated by <strong>Anne-B\u00e9n\u00e9dicte Hoffner<\/strong>, former editor-in-chief of <em>La Croix<\/em> and board member of the Friends of IDEO. Holding a doctorate in Islamic studies with a thesis on the notion of truth in Ibn Taymiyya, Adrien Candiard lives at the Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire convent in Cairo. He is notably the author of <em>Comprendre l&#8217;islam.
