Study Day: “Assessments of Otherness in a Muslim Context”
Lyon, France. The Centre d’Étude des Cultures et des Religions (CECR) and the Confluence: Sciences and Humanities research unit, both affiliated with the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy), are organising a study day on the theme “Assessments of Otherness in a Muslim Context. Openness and Resistance: Crossed Perspectives” on Friday 7 November 2025 from 8:45 am to 5:30 pm, at the Saint-Paul campus, Amphi C402, 10 place des Archives, Lyon.
The aim of this study day is to examine the components of a religious tradition that defines itself both in relation to and at a distance from its “otherness”, whether inherent or external. Through the study of texts and figures, this gathering seeks to reflect a plurality of approaches and perspectives.
Under what conditions can a religious tradition such as Islam become a site of hospitality — or of rejection — toward the different other? On what criteria might one speak of an exclusion of the other perceived as a potential threat? What historical resources and figures may enrich the field of reflection and contribute to a fuller contemporary appropriation?

Lyon, France.
