Study Day “Islamic Philosophy and Prophetology: Ismailism, Sufism, and Hermeticism” (USJ Beirut, 1 May 2026)
The Department of Philosophy at the Ramez G. Chagoury Faculty of Humanities of Saint-Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) invites scholars and the public to a study day devoted to the dialogue between philosophy and prophetology in the intellectual traditions of Islam.
The event will take place online via Microsoft Teams, on Friday 1 May 2026, from 4:00 to 6:55 p.m. (Beirut time). Scientific coordinator: Hadi Fakhoury.
Overview
This study day examines how Islamic philosophy and prophetology have engaged with one another, alternately in dialogue, in tension, and in mutual articulation. Drawing on philosophy, history, theology, and hermeneutics, the participants will revisit the conceptual stakes raised by prophetology, reason and revelation, truth and law, knowledge and authority, as they unfold in the intellectual traditions of Islam, especially in Ismailism, Sufism, Hermeticism, and Avicennism.
Particular attention will be given to the circulation of these traditions between the Islamic world and the West, from their classical formulations to their contemporary reinterpretations.
