Ouvrage majeur de Elizabeth Shakman Hurd (Princeton University Press, 2015, 216 p.), Beyond Religious Freedom interroge la promotion internationale de la liberté religieuse et de l’« engagement religieux » comme instruments de gouvernement. L’auteure montre comment la catégorisation des populations selon la religion, portée par les États et les organisations internationales, redéfinit les rapports sociaux et politiques, en particulier dans les sociétés à majorité musulmane. Un livre de référence pour l’étude des politiques publiques de la religion et de la place de l’islam dans les relations internationales.
A landmark study by Elizabeth Shakman Hurd (Princeton University Press, 2015, 216 pp.), Beyond Religious Freedom examines the international promotion of religious freedom and of “religious engagement” as instruments of governance. Hurd shows how sorting populations by religion, driven by states and international organisations, reshapes social and political relations, particularly in Muslim-majority societies. A key reference for the study of the public politics of religion and of the place of Islam in international relations.
