Dynamics and challenges of the revival of Islamic Studies in Europe

The Institut catholique de Paris is organising a seminar on the rise of Islamic Studies in Europe (Germany, Belgium, France, Italy), on 11 and 12 June 2021.

Extract from the synopsis:

In a troubled international context in which Islam is defined as an ideological marker of numerous conflicts, academic research drawing on history, sociology and political science has proliferated in Europe.

While such research is undoubtedly valuable, it must be coupled with an in-depth knowledge of the sources. In light of this recognition, new academic dynamics are emerging in European countries, drawing on Islamic Studies. The task is to approach the study of Islam — its sacred texts, its thinkers, its law, its theology, its mysticism, its philosophy — from the Islamic sources themselves, sources that must be contextualised in relation to a political and religious environment and approached in dialogue with a textual context, not necessarily Islamic, that emerges from a set of interactions, dialogues, encounters and positionings within diverse social and intellectual environments. Islamic Studies gives an account of the discourse of Muslim thinkers on Islam by establishing filiations and genealogies. Through the historical, critical and philological method, it contributes to deconstructing dogmatic closures and the sacralisation of “narratives” elaborated by the Islamic tradition.

The articulation of Islamic Studies with the “classical” disciplines taught at university has not yet been achieved. This seminar aims to contribute to assessing this dynamic in four European countries, to show that a fine-grained analysis of contemporary realities relating to Islam cannot dispense with Islamic Studies, and to take stock of the growing needs and public solicitations directed at Islamic scholars.
