The Making of Martyrdom (Beirut)

This research project aims to deepen the concept of martyrdom as mobilised in the discourses of the various politico-religious actors on the Lebanese scene. It analyses how this concept is invested, appropriated and reinterpreted by the different communities in order to sacralise their cause, legitimise their action, strengthen their internal cohesion and assert a distinct identity.

Carried by an interdisciplinary team of researchers in theology, Islamic studies, anthropology, philosophy, history and sociology, from three main partner institutions (the Catholic University of Lyon, the Institut chrétiens d’Orient and the Institute for Islamic-Christian Studies), the project examines the forms this notion takes in the various community contexts of Lebanon, seeking to understand the narrative logics, social uses and identity constructions it entails.
