Understanding Salafism
Published in 2022 by Palgrave Macmillan (Springer) in the series The Sciences Po Series in International Relations and Political Economy, this book by Mohamed-Ali Adraoui, professor at Sorbonne Paris Nord University and doctor of political science from Sciences Po, offers the first substantive general survey of contemporary Salafism aimed at a wide academic readership.
The book addresses one of the most visible and debated currents in contemporary radical Islam, shedding light on its history, its fundamental principles, and its political and religious translations, and seeks to explain the current events involving Salafist actors in an objective and dispassionate manner. The author examines with precision the different contemporary Salafist mobilisations by illustrating them with specific cases, while addressing the main debates related to this mode of understanding of the Muslim religion: its potential role in triggering certain forms of violence, its comparability with other fundamentalist versions in other religions, or the way the social sciences can describe its main concepts and discourses.
One of the book’s key claims is that, beyond their claims to Islamic revivalism, contemporary Salafist movements also reflect a product of the modernity they claim to combat. The author draws on an interdisciplinary framework, combining the sociology of religion, political science and international relations.
The book runs to 109 pages and 10 chapters, with partial preview on the Springer page (DOI 10.1007/978-3-031-18089-7).

Springer (DOI 10.1007/978-3-031-18089-7).
