Bannière des Timbuktu Talks annonçant la conférence de Youssouf Sangaré, Islam in Africa: Between Sufism, Salafism, and Indigenous Religious Authority, avec la couverture de son livre Penser l'islam depuis l'Afrique

“Islam in Africa: Between Sufism, Salafism, and Indigenous Religious Authority”, by Youssouf Sangaré

On Friday 30 October 2026, Youssouf Sangaré, Associate Professor (maître de conférences) of Islamic Studies at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco, Paris) and visiting scholar at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, is giving a lecture entitled Islam in Africa: Between Sufism, Salafism, and Indigenous Religious Authority. It is part of the Timbuktu Talks, an annual lecture series on new books and research on Islam in Africa, co-organised by the Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa (ISITA) at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois.

Taking the case of Chérif Ousmane Madani Haïdara and the Ançar Dine movement he founded in Mali (not to be confused with the jihadist group Ansar Dine), the lecture examines the dynamics of contemporary African Islam. Youssouf Sangaré argues that figures like Haïdara articulate a theology of resistance, pushing back against both radical Islamism and “imported” forms of Islam, whether Wahhabi or Arab-centric in orientation. The lecture also addresses broader questions of religious authority, the decolonisation of Islamic knowledge and the plurality of Muslim identities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The lecture draws on his book Penser l’islam depuis l’Afrique. La doctrine de Chérif O. Madani Haïdara (Thinking Islam from Africa: The Doctrine of Chérif O. Madani Haïdara, Riveneuve, 2023), with a foreword by Souleymane Bachir Diagne.

On Wednesday 21 October, he is also giving an in-person lecture at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies of the University of Illinois: Reformist Muslim Thought: Rethinking the Quran and Islamic Tradition from the 19th Century to Today (details).

  • Date: Friday 30 October 2026, 2:00–3:30 pm Central Time (8:00–9:30 pm in Paris);
  • Venue: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (USA), Gregory Hall, room 319, and online (Zoom);
  • Registration: required to receive the Zoom link, via the registration form;
  • Details: see the event page.

  • Date : vendredi 30 octobre 2026, de 14h à 15h30 (heure de Chicago), soit de 20h à 21h30 à Paris ;
  • Lieu : Université de l’Illinois à Urbana-Champaign (États-Unis), Gregory Hall, salle 319, et en ligne (Zoom) ;
  • Inscription : nécessaire pour recevoir le lien Zoom, sur le formulaire de l’Université de l’Illinois ;
