MIDÉO No. 41: The Literal Meaning between Christian Worlds and Muslim Worlds
Entitled after its thematic dossier The Literal Meaning between Christian Worlds and Muslim Worlds, issue 41 of the Mélanges de l’Institut dominicain d’études orientales (MIDÉO) addresses the question of the literal meaning of the sacred Scriptures through a comparative approach to medieval Christian and Muslim exegesis. Arising from a set of study days held in Cairo, it brings biblical and Qurʾānic exegesis into dialogue with theology, law, and philosophy, showing that the “literal” sense is never univocal or fixed, but plural, constructed, and historically situated. Far from superficial comparisons, the contributions shed light, on both sides, on the hermeneutical creativity of medieval worlds and on the intellectual stakes involved in the interpretation of Scripture.
Edited by Sumi Shimahara and Adrien Candiard, the dossier brings together contributions by Emmanuel Bain, Barbara Crostini, Frans van Liere, Sophie Delmas, Gerda Heydemann, Catarina Belo, Fârès Gillon and Robert Gleave. The issue also includes a study by Guillaume de Vaulx on wonder in the work of Zakariyyā al-Qazwīnī, a tribute to Father Claude Gilliot (1940-2025) and book reviews, among them a review by Jean Druel of Julien Sibileau’s study of Ibn Ǧinnī’s Ḫaṣāʾiṣ.
The journal of the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO) in Cairo is published by the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology (IFAO) and is freely available on OpenEdition.
