Christian-Muslim Dialogue, an Opportunity for Africa

At a time when sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing profound socio-political change and the rise of religious radicalism, Christian-Muslim dialogue emerges as an essential requirement and a condition for peace. The fruit of an international seminar held in Senegal in November 2024, this volume brings together contributions from theologians, Islamic studies scholars and practitioners from across the continent.

Through the evocative image of the “parable of the sticks”, the volume examines today’s challenges to living together: the instrumentalisation of religion, denominational rivalries and the transformation of Africa’s Islamic landscape. Drawing on the resources of Christian theology, the Sufi tradition and African wisdom, these proceedings propose concrete ways of building a sincere dialogue, free from identity-based retreat, in the service of development and fraternity.

With a preface by Mgr André Guèye, the book gathers the proceedings of this seminar, held from 11 to 13 November 2024 at the Mont Thabor spiritual centre (Community of the Presentation of Mary, Senegal). It is edited by Emmanuel Pisani, director of the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO, Cairo), who teaches Islamic studies and devotes most of his research to Muslim theologies of dialogue. The book is in French: Le dialogue islamo-chrétien, une chance pour l’Afrique.

With contributions by Romuald Ayangma Babilama, Anne Béatrice Faye, Bienvenu Kamsele Agbaka, Bellarmin Ilunga Kayembe, Basile Essofa Kondoh, Fidèle M. Macara, Bertrand Mbella, Emmanuel Pisani, Christophe Roucou, Gabriel Samba, Adrien Mamadou Sawadogo, Bonaventure Benjamin Mwenda, Pierre-Marie Niang, Vincent Somboro, Patrick Tabaro and Clément Tuureh.
