From the Declaration “Nostra Aetate” to the Document of Abu Dhabi: Reexamining a Historical and Theological Trajectory in the Catholic Approach to Islamic-Christian Dialogue
Jean Jacques Pérennès, former director of the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem, proposes a re-examination of the Catholic approach to Islamic-Christian dialogue, from the Nostra Aetate declaration at Vatican II to the Document on Human Fraternity signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019 by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar. He demonstrates how this document, with its unprecedented style, extends and renews the Catholic perspective on Islam by making fraternity a new paradigm. Beyond theological debates, a climate of friendship and mutual trust is primarily emphasized. As a theologian, Jean-Jacques Pérennès sees this as an invitation for Christians to discern God’s action in the faith of Muslims, a faith that contains a part of mystery still eluding them. Listening to the spiritual journey of the other can help one grow in one’s own religious tradition. This is the new dynamic initiated by this document in the Islamic-Christian dialogue, relying on concrete experiences of encounter such as those lived by the Church of Algeria. <em>Lecture given on February 6, 2024 in Abu Dhabi during the fourth international congress of Pluriel “Islam and Fraternity”, in partnership with TRENDS Research & Advisory.</em>
Jean Jacques Pérennès, ancien directeur de l’École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem, propose une relecture de l’approche catholique du dialogue islamo-chrétien, de la déclaration Nostra Aetate à Vatican II jusqu’au Document sur la Fraternité humaine signé à Abu Dhabi en 2019 par le pape François et le Grand Imam d’Al-Azhar. Il montre comment ce document, par son style inédit, vient prolonger et renouveler le regard catholique sur l’islam en faisant de la fraternité un nouveau paradigme. Au-delà des débats théologiques, c’est d’abord un climat d’amitié et de confiance mutuelle qui est mis en avant. En tant que théologien, Jean-Jacques Pérennès y voit une invitation faite aux chrétiens à discerner l’action de Dieu dans la foi des musulmans, une foi qui contient une part de mystère leur échappant encore. Être à l’écoute du cheminement spirituel de l’autre peut aider à grandir dans sa propre tradition religieuse. Telle est la dynamique nouvelle impulsée par ce document dans le dialogue islamo-chrétien, s’appuyant sur des expériences concrètes de rencontre comme celles vécues par l’Église d’Algérie.
