“Legitimate Defence or Forgotten Obligation? Jihad and the Violence of War in Contemporary Islam”, by Michele Brignone

On Sunday 25 October 2026 at 11 am, Michele Brignone, research director of the Oasis International Foundation and lecturer at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, a partner institution of Pluriel, is giving a lecture entitled Legittima difesa o obbligo dimenticato? Jihad and the Violence of War in Contemporary Islam).

A recurring theme of public debate over recent decades, armed jihad is one of the most controversial issues in the Islamic tradition. While fundamentalist movements and organisations claim it as the royal road to the redemption of the umma, most Muslim thinkers today tend to restrict its scope as far as possible. Both positions appear to depart from classical jurisprudence: the first because it ends up fuelling a cult of violence for its own sake, the second because it redefines the relationship between war, political authority and the expansion of Islam.

Michele Brignone holds a doctorate in the history of non-European countries from the University of Pisa. Since 2009 he has taught Arabic at the Università Cattolica in Milan, where he gives a course on Arab-Islamic political discourse and thought.

The lecture is the second in the series Guerra santa, guerra giusta, non violenza. Le religioni nel nuovo disordine mondiale, curated by Daniele Menozzi, emeritus professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, which examines from a historical perspective the positions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the face of contemporary conflicts.
