“The Power of Place, the Mediation of the Text: Anthropological Remarks on the Pious Visit to Karbalā”, by Sepideh Parsapajouh

In the journal Studia Islamica (Brill, 2021), Sepideh Parsapajouh, an anthropologist at the CNRS (CéSor-EHESS), offers an anthropological analysis of the ziyāra, the pious visit to Shia holy places, focusing in particular on Karbalā, where Imam Husayn is buried.

Bringing together the observation of practices and the mediation of devotional texts, she shows how the holy place concentrates a spiritual power that the pilgrim experiences, negotiates and transmits, at the heart of Twelver Shia piety.
