Federico Stella
Federico Stella is a scholar of Islamic philosophy and of the history of Christian-Muslim relations. He holds a master’s degree in the history of Islamic philosophy (Sapienza University of Rome, 2010) and a doctorate in Oriental studies (Sapienza, 2014); he first worked on the political philosophy of al-Fārābī and its reception in the thought of Leo Strauss.
A postdoctoral researcher at the University of Naples “L’Orientale” within the ERC project The European Qur’an (EuQu), his research focuses on the circulation, reception and translations of the Qur’an and Islamic literature in the early modern Catholic world (17th-19th centuries), with particular attention to the Society of Jesus. With Roberto Tottoli, he co-edited the volume The Qur’an in Rome: Manuscripts, Translations, and the Study of Islam in Early Modern Catholicism (De Gruyter, 2024).
He is a member of the research group in social and political philosophy of the Pontifical Gregorian University. He is currently preparing a monograph on the letters exchanged by Baldassarre Loyola Mandes SJ (1631-1667) with Muslim slaves concerning Islam and the Qur’an.
