Contemporary Moroccan Thought: On Philosophy, Theology, Society, and Culture
Published in 2025 by Brill in the Handbook of Oriental Studies series, Contemporary Moroccan Thought: On Philosophy, Theology, Society, and Culture is a collective volume co-edited by Juan Antonio Macías-Amoretti (University of Granada) and Mohammed Hashas (Tor Vergata University of Rome and LUISS).
This volume offers the first major English-language synthesis on contemporary Moroccan thought in its philosophical, theological, social, and cultural dimensions. It gathers around thirty contributions by international specialists covering the main Moroccan intellectual currents, from debates on Islamic modernity to questions of citizenship, language, and heritage. A significant portion of the chapters focuses on contemporary rereadings of the Islamic tradition in Morocco, on Sufism, on theology of pluralism, and on major figures of Moroccan thought (Abed al-Jabri, Taha Abderrahmane, Fatema Mernissi, among others).
Mohammed Hashas is a Pluriel associate researcher and a leading specialist of contemporary Islamic thought, particularly in the Arabic-speaking and Mediterranean spheres.
