“Islam and Muslims”, by Michel Younès
On Thursday 21 May 2026 at 6:30 pm, the Institut Français de Civilisation Musulmane (IFCM) in Lyon will host a lecture by Michel Younès, Professor of Theology and Islamic Studies at the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy) and General Coordinator of Pluriel, entitled “Islam and Muslims: Doctrines, Schools, and Current Trends”.
Islam, as a historical, religious, and civilisational reality, resists easy definition. It can be understood as a form of political governance, an expression of faith, a social vision with regulatory practices, or as a civilisational and cultural heritage. From its earliest days and throughout its history, Islam has transformed the ways of inhabiting these realities, making it impossible to describe as a monolithic phenomenon. Islam is, in fact, plural.
The lecture extends the reflection developed in L’islam et les musulmans. Doctrines, écoles et tendances actuelles (Cerf, “Patrimoines” series), which offers a historical and theological reading of the currents shaping contemporary Islam.

L’islam et les musulmans. Doctrines, écoles et tendances actuelles (Cerf, coll. « Patrimoines »)
