Diego Sarrió Cucarella, member of Pluriel and specialist in Islamic-Christian dialogue, appointed bishop in Algeria

Saturday, January 25, 2025. Pope Francis has appointed Father Diego Ramón Sarrió Cucarella as the new bishop of the Diocese of Laghouat-Ghardaïa in Algeria on January 25, 2025.

President of the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) since 2018, Father Sarrió Cucarella, 53, is a recognized expert in Islamic-Christian relations. His research focuses particularly on the intellectual history of dialogue between the two religions. He completed his thesis at Georgetown University on the 13th-century Egyptian Muslim scholar, Shihāb al-Dīn al-Qarāfī.

This appointment marks a return to the Algerian Sahara for this member of the Missionaries of Africa, known as the “White Fathers,” who served as an animator at the Ghardaïa Cultural Center between 2001 and 2003. His career has also taken him to Egypt, Tunisia, and Rome, where he has been serving as a consultor to the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue.

Arabic-speaking and author of numerous publications on Islamic-Christian dialogue, Father Sarrió Cucarella was also the director of the scientific journal Islamochristiana.

Samedi 25 janvier 2025.
