Stories of the Foundation of Sanctuaries: Passage from one Community to another and Territorial Rooting

Summary: A study of the stories of the foundation of certain sanctuaries in Lebanon reveals the fluidity of the frontiers between different communities. A certain community may have been at the origin of a sanctuary of another community. The historical authenticity of these stories is not essential here; what is important is to show the continuity of what is transmitted from one community to another. One also finds a territorial continuity with the past: the place remains respected,  whichever community actually is in charge of it. This phenomenon is present in regions where different communities live in direct contact with one another and concerns mostly sanctuaries dedicated to figures venerated in several religions, such as Mary, Saint George, etc. The present article analyses three typical examples.
