A new SCIS project on gender justice in Muslim associations in Switzerland

Launched in May 2026, the project “Gender Justice as a Resource for the Participation of Muslims in Switzerland” aims to study gender relations within Muslim associations in Switzerland. It is led by sociologist Mallory Schneuwly Purdie, of the Swiss Centre for Islam and Society (SCIS) at the University of Fribourg, a partner institution of Pluriel.

Focused on Muslim women, this project aims to move beyond caricatures to reveal the different forms of female Muslim leadership, role models, and conceptions of gender equality, while making visible the active role played by women in key positions within Muslim associations.

Through a national empirical study conducted in collaboration with women in the field, the project adopts a participatory approach: the research findings will be discussed nationally with actors from Muslim communities as well as integration promotion bodies. They will be used to develop concrete action proposals against discrimination and to foster constructive dialogue between religious, civil, and institutional actors in the fields of professional and social integration.

Since May 2026, political scientist Fatima Al-Khafaji, a Middle East specialist, has joined the project as a junior researcher.
