Ḥaydar Ibrāhīm ʿAlī, a Thinker on Multiple Fronts

Abstract

Ḥaydar Ibrāhīm ʿAlī, a Sudanese sociologist of religion, is a committed intellectual whose writings both arise from and respond to the challenges of his society. He calls for a liberation theology in Islam that connects worship and social justice, for a democracy grounded in freedom that safeguards religious, cultural, and ethnic minorities from the tyranny of the majority, and for an institutional authority to regulate fatwās and counter extremist interpretations. The article explores these ideas and examines their implications for Christian-Muslim dialogue in the Arab world.

This article by Guy-Raymond Sarkis (Saint Joseph University, Beirut) appears in the special issue “Christian-Muslim Dialogue” of Laval théologique et philosophique 82/1 (2026), co-edited by Guy-Raymond Sarkis, Emmanuel Pisani and Michel Younès.
