The Book of Stratagems
Published as El libro de las estratagemas (Editorial Trotta, 2021), this annotated Spanish translation of the Tadhkirat al-harawiyya fi’l-hiyal al-harbiyya (“Al-Harawi’s Memorial on the Stratagems of War”) is the work of Olga Torres Díaz (University of Seville, IXBILIA group), who is also the author of the introduction and notes.
Written during the Crusades to consolidate Saladin’s emerging Ayyubid state, this text stands as a singular example among Arab-Islamic mirrors of princes. Its distinctive feature is the defence of stratagems and manipulation in the exercise of power, testifying to a relative secularisation of the political.

Rédigé à l’époque des Croisades pour consolider l’État ayyoubide naissant de Saladin, ce texte représente un exemple singulier parmi les miroirs de princes arabo-islamiques. وُضِع النصّ زمن الحملات الصليبية لتوطيد أركان الدولة الأيوبية الناشئة في عهد صلاح الدين، وهو مثال فريد ضمن أدب «مرايا الأمراء» العربي-الإسلامي. تتفرّد أهميّته بدفاعه عن استخدام الحيلة والمناورة في ممارسة السلطة، بما يشهد على علمنة نسبية للشأن السياسي.
