Thinking Islam from Africa: The Doctrine of Chérif O. Madani Haïdara
Long overlooked by Islamic studies, Islam south of the Sahara is nonetheless a place where Islamic doctrines are being reformulated. Contrary to the caricature inherited from Orientalist scholarship and to the prejudices of some Arab Muslim authors, the Islam of sub-Saharan Africa offers texts, figures and religious doctrines that engage fully with the most topical questions: the interpretation of the Qur’an, Islam and violence, the place of Muhammad and his family in Muslim spirituality, the place of women, the relationship between theology and politics, otherness… All these questions run through the thought of the Malian preacher Chérif Ousmane Madani Haïdara, a major figure of West African Islam today. This book sheds new light on current debates within Islam.
An Islamic studies scholar, Youssouf Sangaré is Associate Professor (maître de conférences) at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco, Paris). The book has a foreword by Souleymane Bachir Diagne, professor of philosophy and French and Francophone studies at Columbia University (New York).
Youssouf Sangaré presents this research on 30 October 2026 in the Timbuktu Talks series of the University of Illinois and Northwestern University (see the announcement).
Read the review by Seydi Diamil Niane (Institut fondamental d’Afrique noire) in the Revue d’histoire contemporaine de l’Afrique, no. 8 (2025), in French.
