Islamic Visions of Jesus: Revelation, Prophecy, and Eschatology
Abstract
Published in the collective volume Jerusalem in Memory and Eschatology: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Visions of the Past and Future of Jerusalem, edited by Emma O’Donnell Polyakov (Bloomsbury Academic, London/New York/Oxford, 2025, pp. 51-60), this chapter by Antonio Cuciniello, researcher at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and a specialist of contemporary Muslim societies, offers a synthesis of the Muslim figures of Jesus (ʿĪsā) at the crossroads of Qur’anic revelation, prophetology and eschatological expectation.
Drawing on the Qur’anic verses that present Jesus as prophet and Messiah, on the ḥadīth-corpus concerning his return at the end of times, and on the readings elaborated by the classical Muslim tradition, Cuciniello maps the way in which Islam has integrated the figure of Jesus into its own theology of revelation and its eschatological horizon. He brings out the shared anchor points (Jesus as prophet, Word and Spirit of God, his eschatological coming) and the diverging ones (denial of the crucifixion, refusal of divine sonship) that have shaped the Christian-Muslim conversation about Christ for fourteen centuries.
The chapter belongs to the volume edited by Emma O’Donnell Polyakov, devoted to Jewish, Christian and Muslim visions of the past and future of Jerusalem, which also includes a complementary contribution by Dirk Ansorge (a Catholic perspective, pp. 61-79).

Jerusalem in Memory and Eschatology: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Visions of the Past and Future of Jerusalem، بإشراف إيما أودونيل بولياكوف (Bloomsbury Academic، لندن/نيويورك/أكسفورد، 2025، ص 51-60)، تحت عنوانه الأصليّ:
Islamic Visions of Jesus: Revelation, Prophecy, and Eschatology
