A Saudi Fatwā on the Question of the “Unity of Religions”
In this article published in the journal Studia Islamica 120/1 (Brill, 2025, pp. 109-130), Dominique Avon and Othman El Kachtoul study a fatwā issued by the Saudi Lajnat al-Iftāʾ on the concept of the “unity of religions” (waḥdat al-adyān). The authors trace the evolution of Saudi Arabia’s official religious discourse from 1997 to 2023, showing how the question of religious plurality is reformulated over time in the face of the internationalization of interreligious dialogue.
The article sheds light on the tensions between strict doctrinal positions and pragmatic adaptations, as well as on the role of Saudi religious institutions in producing a normative discourse on the relationship between Islam and other religious traditions.

Dans cet article publié dans la revue Studia Islamica 120/1 (Brill, 2025, p. 109-130), Dominique Avon et Othman El Kachtoul étudient une fatwā de la Lajnat al-Iftāʾ saoudienne consacrée au concept d’« unité des religions » (waḥdat al-adyān). Les auteurs retracent l’évolution du discours religieux officiel saoudien de 1997 à 2023, en montrant comment la question de la pluralité religieuse est reformulée au fil du temps face à l’internationalisation des enjeux de dialogue interreligieux.
L’article éclaire les tensions entre positions doctrinales strictes et adaptations pragmatiques, ainsi que le rôle des institutions religieuses saoudiennes dans la production d’un discours normatif sur les relations entre l’islam et les autres traditions religieuses.

في هذا المقال المنشور في مجلة Studia Islamica 120/1 (Brill، 2025، ص 109-130)، يدرس دومينيك آفون وعثمان القشطول فتوى صادرة عن لجنة الإفتاء السعودية حول مفهوم « وحدة الأديان ». ويتتبّع الباحثان تطوّر الخطاب الديني الرسمي السعودي من عام 1997 إلى عام 2023، مبيّنَين كيفية إعادة صياغة مسألة التعدّد الديني عبر الزمن في مواجهة تدويل رهانات الحوار بين الأديان.
يُلقي المقال الضوء على التوترات بين المواقف العقدية الصارمة والتكيّفات البراغماتية، وكذلك على دور المؤسسات الدينية السعودية في إنتاج خطاب معياري حول العلاقة بين الإسلام والتقاليد الدينية الأخرى.
