Ahmed Gomaa
Born in 1976 in Minya (Egypt), Ahmed Gomaa Abdelhamid Othman is a doctor in codicology and textual editing (taḥqīq), specialising in the critical edition of Arabic-Islamic heritage manuscripts.
A graduate in history and civilisation from al-Azhar University (1999) who earned his doctorate in 2012, he was a researcher at al-Azhar University’s Centre for the Edition of Heritage Texts in Cairo (2010-2017), then at the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO) in Cairo, where he worked on the project devoted to the relations between texts in Islamic civilisation. He is now a research associate at the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology (IFAO) in Cairo.
His work focuses on the critical edition of Arabic manuscripts, the sacred topography of Cairo and the literature of ziyāra (the visitation of the tombs of saints, scholars and pious figures), the history of al-Azhar, and the Sufi writings of Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī. He has published critical editions with international academic publishers, notably the Orient-Institut Beirut (Bibliotheca Islamica series) and the IFAO.
