Pierre Lory
Born in Paris in 1952, Pierre Lory is Directeur d’études émérite at the École pratique des hautes études (EPHE-PSL), Section of Religious Sciences, where he held the chair of “Muslim Mysticism” from October 1991 to 2020. A former director of the Department of Arab, Medieval and Modern Studies at the Institut français du Proche-Orient in Damascus (2007-2011), he is a member of the Laboratoire d’études sur les monothéismes (LEM, UMR 8584, CNRS/EPHE/Sorbonne). His research focuses on Sufism and esotericism in classical Islam, spiritual exegesis of the Qur’an, Arabic alchemy (the Jabirian corpus), the science of letters, magic and dream interpretation. He is the author of reference works including Alchimie et mystique en terre d’Islam (Verdier, 1989; repr. Gallimard, 2003), Le rêve et ses interprétations en Islam (Albin Michel, 2003) and La Dignité de l’homme face aux anges, aux animaux et aux djinns (Albin Michel, 2018).
