The Virtues of the Good Muslim

Published in 2025 by Edizioni Ca’ Foscari in Venice, this monograph by Ida Zilio-Grandi (Ca’ Foscari University) is the augmented English translation of Le virtù del buon Musulmano, first published by Einaudi (Turin) in 2020.

The author explores the moral foundations of Islam through a wide range of religious literature in Arabic, from classical texts to contemporary voices. Each chapter is devoted to a key virtue of Muslim ethics (gratitude, hospitality, modesty, mercy, forgiveness, care for the poor and the weak, generosity of the gift…), traced back to its Qur’anic, prophetic and wisdom sources. What emerges, the author stresses, is the specifically moral dimension of Islam which, alongside the dogmatic and the juridical, fully belongs to the religious Law (sharīʿa).

The volume extends a body of work Zilio-Grandi has devoted for more than two decades to the Arab-Muslim ethical lexicon; several of these studies have already been relayed on Pluriel — notably her contributions on ḥilm, raḥma, gratitude, repentance and silence.

The book is available in open access (PDF) through the Ca’ Foscari open archive.

Le virtù del buon Musulmano (Einaudi, Torino, 2020)
