“Geopolitics in the Age of Apocalyptic Discourse”, by Adrien Candiard and Othman El Kachtoul
The Collège des Bernardins in Paris is hosting a lecture on the links between geopolitics and eschatology in the Middle East, with Brother Adrien Candiard, a Dominican theologian and scholar of Islam, and Othman El Kachtoul, agrégé in Arabic and holder of a doctorate in Islamic studies, author of Rendez-vous à Dābiq (Karthala, 2023). The discussion will be moderated by François Jolys.
From the propaganda of the so-called Islamic State to the rhetoric of Christian Zionism, references to the end times are intertwined with major geopolitical stakes. Understanding Abrahamic conceptions of the last things has thus become a central issue once again for political and diplomatic actors; in societies where Jews, Christians and Muslims live side by side, these discourses also weigh on relations between believers. On 20 May 2026 in Cairo, Adrien Candiard had already warned against the return of such apocalyptic discourses in all three monotheisms (see his lecture “War and Peace”).
The evening opens a 2026-2027 lecture series on geopolitics, contemporary history and religion, co-programmed with the historian Louis Manaranche; the following sessions will take place on 9 November 2026, 1 February and 15 March 2027.
- Date: Monday 12 October 2026, 8:00 to 9:30 pm (Paris time);
- Venue: Collège des Bernardins, 20 rue de Poissy, 75005 Paris;
- Fees: €12 (reduced rate €6, supporter rate €25);
- Registration: via the Collège des Bernardins ticket office.
