Fratelli tutti: The Dream of God for a More Human World
One of the key words in Pope Francis’ encyclical Fratelli tutti on fraternity and social friendship is « dream ». The Pope opens with an invitation, « Let us dream, then, as a single human family » (no. 8), and closes with a prayer, « Inspire in us a dream of renewed encounter, dialogue, justice and peace » (no. 287). For Francis, to dream is to practise hope. The ambition of Fratelli tutti is precisely « to take up and discuss many new paths of hope » (no. 54).
To mark the first anniversary of Fratelli tutti, the Pontifical Gregorian University, in collaboration with Georgetown University, organised a series of conferences (October to December 2021) to explore the message of the encyclical in greater depth. Speakers from the various faculties, institutes and centres of the Gregorian University reflect in this volume on the « paths of hope » opened by Francis from the point of view of their respective disciplines.
Firmly rooted in the Document on Human Fraternity signed at Abu Dhabi by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayyeb (4 February 2019), the volume extends the reflection on Muslim-Christian dialogue and on the shared commitment of religions to a more fraternal world.

Un des mots-clés de l’encyclique du pape François Fratelli tutti sur la fraternité et l’amitié sociale est celui de « rêve ». Le pape ouvre par une invitation, « Rêvons en tant que membres d’une même famille humaine » (n° 8), et referme par une prière, « Inspire-nous un rêve nouveau de fraternité, de dialogue, de justice et de paix » (n° 287). Pour François, rêver, c’est pratiquer l’espérance. L’ambition de Fratelli tutti est précisément « d’ouvrir de nouveaux chemins d’espérance » (n° 54).
À l’occasion du premier anniversaire de Fratelli tutti, l’Université pontificale grégorienne, en collaboration avec l’Université de Georgetown, a organisé un cycle de conférences (octobre-décembre 2021) pour approfondir le message de l’encyclique. Les intervenants issus des différentes facultés, instituts et centres de la Grégorienne relisent, dans ce volume, les « chemins d’espérance » ouverts par François à partir de leurs disciplines respectives.
Placé dans le sillage direct du Document sur la fraternité humaine signé à Abou Dhabi par le pape François et le grand imam d’al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayyeb (4 février 2019), ce volume prolonge la réflexion sur le dialogue islamo-chrétien et l’engagement commun des religions pour un monde plus fraternel.

من الكلمات المفتاحية في رسالة البابا فرنسيس العامة « الأخوة الإنسانية » (Fratelli tutti) حول الأخوة والصداقة الاجتماعية كلمةُ « الحلم ». يفتتح البابا نصّه بدعوة: « لنحلم إذن، بوصفنا أسرة إنسانية واحدة » (رقم 8)، ويختمه بصلاة: « ألهمنا حلما متجددا في اللقاء والحوار والعدالة والسلام » (رقم 287). فالحلم بالنسبة إلى فرنسيس هو ممارسةٌ للرجاء، وطموح رسالته بالتحديد أن « تفتح دروبا جديدة للرجاء » (رقم 54).
بمناسبة الذكرى الأولى لصدور « الأخوة الإنسانية »، نظّمت الجامعة البابوية الغريغورية، بالتعاون مع جامعة جورج تاون، سلسلة من المؤتمرات (بين تشرين الأول/أكتوبر وكانون الأول/ديسمبر 2021) لتعميق قراءة الرسالة العامة. ويقدّم في هذا المجلّد أساتذةٌ من كليات الجامعة الغريغورية ومعاهدها ومراكزها قراءات لـ « دروب الرجاء » التي فتحها البابا، انطلاقا من اختصاصاتهم المختلفة.
يندرج هذا العمل في الامتداد المباشر لوثيقة « الأخوة الإنسانية من أجل السلام العالمي والعيش المشترك » التي وقّعها البابا فرنسيس وشيخ الأزهر أحمد الطيّب في أبو ظبي (4 شباط/فبراير 2019)، ويمضي في تعميق التفكير في الحوار الإسلامي المسيحي والالتزام المشترك بين الأديان من أجل عالم أكثر أخوة.
