Born in 1956 in Tehran, Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi has been director of studies at the Religious Sciences Section of the École Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) in Paris since 1996, holding the chair of “Exegesis and Theology of the Shia Islam”.
After studying in Tehran and Paris, he obtained a doctorate from the University of Paris-III and the EPHE in 1991 on the subject “Figure of the Imam and the birth of the Shia Islam, 2nd-4th century of the Hegira /IIIth-Xth century of the Christian era” with the mention “Very Honorable with unanimous congratulations”. His doctoral thesis was awarded the first prize of the Mahvi Foundation (Geneva) for the best doctoral thesis in Islam Studies.
Since 2015, he has been organising monthly seminars at the University of Paris (PSL) with professors Gilles Kepel and Bernard Rougier.
