Islam and Scientific Examination: A Renewed Quest

“How can we establish an objective, rigorous, and detached study of Islam in the face of the excesses generated by its politicization? It is to answer this burning question that the French Institute of Islamology (IFI) was created in 2022, at the request of the President of the Republic. This public institution’s mission is to develop high-level Islamology by promoting, on a national scale, the scientific examination of belief systems, knowledge, and practices specific to the various currents of the Islamic religion. Here are the inaugural lectures given at the Sorbonne on June 15, 2023, by internationally renowned scholars: Christian Robin, specialist in the archaeology of the Arabian Peninsula; François Déroche, specialist in the Quran; Samuela Pagani, specialist in Sufism; and Dominique Avon, specialist in contemporary Islam. This book constitutes the first volume of the IFI Library which, under the aegis of Mohammad Ali Amir-Moezzi and Juliette Dumas, aims to publish the major texts of Islamology in order to dispel fundamentalist and militant interpretations. An indispensable introduction.”
