Call for Papers — “Of Priests and Sufis: Revisiting Catholic Scholarship on Islamic Mysticism” (IDEO, Cairo, 6–7 June 2026)

International conference at the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO), Cairo, 6–7 June 2026, within the MSCA Horizon Europe project SEMENSUF – Seminal Sufism in Motion. Coordinated by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Milan) with IDEO.

Scope

The conference revisits a quieter yet decisive strand in modern Catholic–Muslim encounters: sustained Catholic scholarly engagement with Sufism and its historical, theological, and hermeneutical consequences. Guiding questions include theological and ecclesiological implications, Muslim scholarly responses, contributions to shaping a modern Sufi canon, and the colonial or interpretive effects of this scholarship. A historical backdrop spans figures such as Asín Palacios, Massignon, Nwyia, de Beaurecueil, Gramlich, and Jackson, and institutions like USJ Beirut, PISAI, and IDEO, whose manuals and anthologies trained generations of scholars, often in dialogue with Muslim students.

Axes

  • I — Catholic scholarship and contexts. Profiles of Catholic religious engaging Sufism; institutional networks (USJ, PISAI, IDEO); geographies of encounter; colonial and post-colonial settings; shifts from Orientalist frames to post–Vatican II scholarship; tensions between academic study and lived mystical engagement; gender dynamics.

  • II — Texts and interpretations. Editions, translations, and commentaries; theological framings and risks of projection; the fascination with Sufism as “the good other”; canon formation through anthologies; textual networks and interreligious exchanges.

  • III — Receptions and reciprocal influence. Muslim responses and canon-building; selective receptions; reciprocal effects of Catholic editions on Muslim scholarship; theological repercussions for Catholic thought; emerging collaborative models.

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts 300–400 words, outlining topic, sources, and methodology, plus a 100–150-word biographical note (affiliation, publications). Deadline 15 December 2025.
  • Send to riccardo.paredi@unicatt.it
  • Notifications 31 January 2026.

Practical information

  • Venue: IDEO, Cairo.
  • Working languages: English, Arabic, French.
  • Accommodation provided. Limited travel bursaries with priority for early-career researchers and participants from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.
