Karim Kardady

Karim Kardady is a PhD candidate in applied human sciences at the University of Montreal (UdM), under the supervision of Violaine Lemay and the co-supervision of Wael Saleh. His thesis, Islamism, terrorism and digital propaganda: what prospects for preventive intervention against the online recruitment of young people?, addresses online radicalisation and the prevention of jihadist recruitment of young people, with a particular focus on Quebec.

He is an associate researcher with the PLURIEL network and with the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society (TSAS). He takes part in the PLURIEL-affiliated research group “Epistemological and methodological issues in the study of violence in the name of Islam”, and also contributes to the UNESCO-PREV Chair on the Prevention of Radicalisation and Violent Extremism and to the Society, Law and Religions Research Centre (SoDRUS) at the University of Sherbrooke. Since 2026, he has also joined the PLURIEL research group “Interreligious Dialogue Assisted by Artificial Intelligence”, coordinated by Wael Saleh.

In May 2026, he delivered a paper at the annual Acfas Congress in Trois-Rivières entitled Radicalisation and the Arab world: conflicts of knowledge and academic narratives on violent Islamism. Reflections drawn from Ibn Khaldun’s Al-Muqaddima (1377), in a session devoted to critical rereadings of academic paradigms on Islamism.

A former member of Morocco’s intelligence services (Directorate-General for Territorial Surveillance, counter-terrorism) for more than eight years, he developed expertise there on radicalisation leading to violence, and in particular on radical Islamism. He holds a law degree from Hassan II University in Casablanca and two master’s degrees from the University of Sherbrooke (applied political studies; intercultural mediation), while also serving as a department head at the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal.
