Session “Reading the Qur’an Today”

Training session organised by the Institute of Science and Theology of Religions (ISTR), Institut catholique de Paris, from 8 to 10 June 2022.

The publication of Le Coran des historiens is a major editorial event. It testifies to the ferment of research on the Qur’an and to its recent renewal in a historical perspective. But what do these works tell us, and is it possible today to read every verse of the Qur’an in the light of critical history — or must we acknowledge that this ferment is still in its early stages? It is with this question that this in-depth session will open, with the intervention of one of the key contributors to the Summa, Professor Ali Amir-Moezzi.

But the history of the Qur’an is also the history of its plural readings — spiritual or philosophical, traditional or modern. How have Muslims read the Qur’an, and how do they read it today?

Beyond the historical approach, the session will introduce these diverse readings by drawing on very concrete verses and by presenting the keys developed by Muslim thinkers for reading, interpreting and also translating the sacred Book of Islam.

Ali Amir-Moezzi.
